Mechanism & research
MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded within the 12S rRNA region of mtDNA. It activates AMPK, the master cellular energy sensor, increasing glucose uptake via GLUT4 translocation and enhancing fatty-acid β-oxidation. Preclinical research shows it reverses age- and diet-induced insulin resistance, improves mitochondrial biogenesis, and protects against high-fat-diet-induced obesity, with circulating levels declining in humans with age and metabolic disease.
